Emancipation Day — Youth Fireside Chat

The Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce invites the Brandon University community and the broader public to attend a special Emancipation Day Celebration honouring Dr. Gervan Fearon, on Saturday, August 1, 2026. Dr. Fearon served as BU President from 2014–17 and was the first Black president of a Canadian university.

The celebration will include a free Youth Fireside Chat from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the WIS Multicultural Centre, 403 13th Street, Brandon. This interactive conversation will give youth, students, emerging leaders, and young professionals an opportunity to engage directly with Dr. Fearon, ask questions, and learn from his leadership journey.

The celebration will also include a free Legacy Award Gala that evening at the Clarion Hotel in Brandon, recognizing Dr. Fearon’s historic leadership and contributions to Brandon University, the City of Brandon, Manitoba, and Canadian higher education. Doors open at 5 p.m.
