VISITING ARTIST ZOOM TALKS – WINTER 2022
ISHKAABATENS WAASA GAA INAABATEG DEPARTMENT OF VISUAL ART
Aganetha Dyck is an internationally acclaimed Canadian sculptor. Born in 1937 in Winnipeg, she studied Studio Art and Art History at Prince Albert Community College in 1972, then Art History at the University of Winnipeg from 1980 to 1982. Her first works from the 1970’s and 1980’s are described as transforming domestic processes into fine art, thereby validating activities that are traditionally considered feminine, using household materials such as buttons, wool fabrics, canning jars and cigarettes.
Dyck is best known for her work with honeybees, a process she describes as collaborative. Placing objects into beehives, the bees then slowly build their honeycomb onto them. As well as her aesthetic appreciation of the bee’s work, she is interested in environmental issues, specifically the power of the small and in inter-species communication. Her research asks questions about the ramifications all living beings would experience should honeybees disappear from earth.
Since the late seventies her work has been shown in hundreds of solo and group exhibitions across Canada, in the U.S., England, France and in the Netherlands and is held in collections of major galleries including the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the National Gallery of Canada. She currently resides in Winnipeg.
