Eliza Griffiths is a Canadian artist whose work involves the creation of fictitious characters in open-ended narrative tableaux. Character-driven, her paintings foreground issues of gender, identity, sexuality, mental and emotional states, as well as interrelationship between self and other. Recent themes include notions of recovery, compassion, neurodiversity and social need.
Griffiths was born in in 1965 in London, UK and immigrated to Canada at the age of eight. She studied Studio Art at Concordia University and did graduate studies in Contemporary Art History and Theory at Carleton University. Over the past 30 years Griffiths’ paintings and projects have been exhibited across Canada and internationally, including Arsenal Contemporary, New York; Ellephant Gallery, Montreal; Mulherin and Pollard, New York; Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art, Toronto; among others.
Her work has been featured in Canadian Art Magazine; Border Crossings; C-Magazine; NYArts Magazine among others. Griffiths currently lives and works in Montreal and Ottawa and is Professor Emeritus of Studio Art at Concordia University where she was Associate Professor in Painting and Drawing.
