Bringing in the Bystander: A Prevention Workshop for Establishing a Community of Responsibility ®, developed at the University of New Hampshire, and first used in Canada by the University of Windsor, is a workshop designed to encourage participants to see themselves as bystanders who might safely intervene to prevent a sexual assault before it occurs.

The format uses recognition of inappropriate behaviour, skill building, asking for a commitment to intervene and role modelling what to do. Participants learn the importance of awareness, identifying potential risks in various situations, to develop empathy and support survivors, and how to safely interrupt or intervene in situations that could lead to sexualized violence.

Why do we need Bystanders?

A Bystander is a member of the BU community who witnesses or is aware of an incident of sexual violence. They play an important role in helping shift beliefs or societal norms from victim-blaming to a shared responsibility for us all to keep our campus safe and create a culture of consent. Not only can they help survivors arrive at resources that can assist them, they also create a community where individuals feel safe and supported to come forward.

Workshop Facilitator: Carla Navid, Sexualized Violence Education and Prevention Coordinator

Brandon University is committed to being an accessible institution. To ensure that any event is available to all who are interested in attending, please advise us in advance of any accessibility considerations. Accessibility contact: communications@brandonu.ca
