Event Navigation
Come on down to the Kavanagh Courtyard at noon and enjoy a free vegetarian meal sponsored by the Sikh Community of Brandon.
The main objective of Langar is to establish oneness and equality in humankind. This unique concept was the first of its kind in the world, started in the Punjab region of India and now it’s all over the world whereever Sikhs have their Gurdwaras (temples). Langer (meal) is served free of charge to anyone regardless of religion, caste, gender, social status or ethnicity. The food served at a Langer is always vegetarian, freshly cooked and served by Sikh community members.
Presently, Langer is universally accepted by other faiths and communities as a symbol of equality. In the Langer hall in a Gurdwara people sit on the floor in lines and eat together. Chairs and tables are there for people who are unable to sit on the floor. The institution of Langer is maintained in Gurdwaras by local Sikh community members. The tradition of Langer also expresses the ethics of sharing, community, inclusiveness and oneness of all Humankind.
