Event Navigation

Have you ever wondered how a play goes from the page to the stage?

Then you will be interested in attending “Playwriting in Action: A Dramaturgy Workshop with Rory Runnells” on Wed. March 27, 2019, on the BU campus.

The workshop will include a reading of two short plays by BU student Lindsay Michiels followed by a session in which the plays will be critiqued by Winnipeg dramaturge Rory Runnells.

“All plays professionally produced in Manitoba and across the country undergo one or more such workshops,” says Professor Dale Lakevold, “and student Lindsay Michiels’ excellent scripts are no exception.”

“These particular scripts of hers have already had a local production with the Brandon University Drama Club, and they are very well positioned to go on to other productions elsewhere.”

The English & Creative Writing Literary Exchange is pleased to welcome Winnipeg dramaturge Rory Runnells to Brandon for this workshop.

Runnells was the coordinator of the Manitoba Association of Playwrights from its founding in 1983. He has recently this year moved on from his position at MAP after 35 years.

“Runnells has been greatly responsible for overseeing the development of original Manitoba theatre from a time when it was difficult to say that there was a professional playwriting community in the province,” Lakevold said.

He writes program notes for the Manitoba Opera and has been the drama editor for the literary journal Prairie Fire for a number of years. In addition, his book reviews can be found regularly in the Winnipeg Free Press.

The playwright, along with Professor Dale Lakevold’s Creative Writing 30:274 class, will be in attendance at this workshop.

It is open to all with no admission. The workshop takes place from 3:40 – 5:00 pm in the Louis Riel Room.

This event is supported with the assistance of the Manitoba Arts Council and the Dean of Arts Office at Brandon University.

Brandon University is committed to being an accessible institution. To ensure that any event is available to all who are interested in attending, please advise us in advance of any accessibility considerations. Accessibility contact: communications@brandonu.ca
