THIS LIVE, VIRTUAL WORKSHOP IS OPEN TO BU FACULTY & STAFF

MAX # OF PARTICIPANTS – 30

Microaggressions are actions or statements that involve discrimination against people from marginalized groups. These actions are often indirect or subtle, and may be unintentional or even well-intentioned: regardless, they are experienced as painful, demeaning and contribute to creating a toxic work environment for the people who experience them.

In this three hour, interactive zoom training, taught by Delia Joseph and Karen Ridd, participants will learn how to identify, reduce and address microaggressions. Participants will be given a small amount of ‘homework’ to do prior to the session, as well as a training manual for use during and after the session, including follow-up resources. Trainers will make use of current research in the field, brief videos and personal reflections in creating a safe and engaging learning environment.

Goals of the Training

  • Recognize Microaggressions and their impact
  • Identify common Microaggressions
  • Understand the concept of “Implicit Bias” and identify our own biases
  • Gain tools for dealing with Microaggressions
    • As a bystander
    • As a “target”
    • As the one doing the Microaggression

This workshop is for you if you are willing to:

  • Have an open mind
  • Look candidly at yourself
  • Be willing to admit “hey – I don’t understand this”
  • Be willing to learn, listen and share
  • Engage in the work of making the world a more equitable place for all
