Indigenous Peoples’ Centre

Event Navigation

Series of blue, white and gold ribbonsThursday, Jan. 4, 2024 is Ribbon Skirt Day. Ribbon Skirt Day is an opportunity for everyone to wear clothing that reflects and represents your culture and heritage. Everyone, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, should feel invited to participate.

Each Thursday this month, the Indigenous Peoples’ Centre will host a Ribbon Skirt-making session from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This is a chance not only to show off your own traditions and ancestry, but to learn from those around us the true diversity that fills the BU campus. Ribbon Skirt Day is a learning and sharing opportunity for everyone, but we offer some guidelines to ensure respectful and successful engagement.

People may be wearing traditional Indigenous Regalia such as Ribbon Skirts, Beadwork clothing, Sashes, or other culturally appropriate items. These are often gorgeous, handmade pieces, and may even be delicate heirloom items. You should always wait to be invited before reaching out to touch someone else’s clothing or Regalia. Some it may never be appropriate to touch at all.

Please let us use this day to celebrate everyone’s unique background and wear traditional clothing and Regalia to be able to embrace everyone’s unique culture and contributions. Ribbon Skirt Day is a time to celebrate and learn about each other.

Brandon University is committed to being an accessible institution. To ensure that any event is available to all who are interested in attending, please advise us in advance of any accessibility considerations. Accessibility contact: communications@brandonu.ca
