Talk on current revolution and women’s rights in Iran
Event Navigation
On September 16, 2022, while in custody, the Iranian morality police mercilessly murdered Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman. Mahsa encountered police brutality because her hijab was not in accordance with hijab laws in Iran. Her brutal murder instigated a series of ongoing protests and human rights actions in Iran, as young people are demanding emancipation from gender segregation laws in Iran. As women remove their hijabs and burn them, the country is in a state of unrest, surveillance, and a nationwide internet blackout. The riot police treat the protestors with the utmost violence and abuse. The government is placing a nationwide censored social media platform to limit global awareness of the current state. However, this has not stopped the international recognition of the movement by Iranian expatriates and other human rights activists, as women cut their hair in solidarity with Iranian women.
To recognize the Iranian women’s experience and be a voice for Iranian people who are facing an uncertain future, we would like to gather and discuss the current revolution and women’s rights in Iran. Ms. Jessica Acero and Dr. Serena Petrella, in collaboration with the Sociology Club, BUSU and the Dean of Students, are inviting you to join the conversation with Dr. Shirin Khayambashi in Clark Hall 206 on Nov. 16 at 6 pm for pizza and beer to discuss the current revolution and its gendered consequences for Iranian women.
