Event Navigation

To celebrate Black Excellence, and in preparation for Black History Month, we will be reading the book “The Skin We’re In: A Year of Black Resistance and Power” by Desmond Cole. (Winner of the 2020 Toronto Book Award, National Bestseller, Nominated for the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing)

The Skin We’re In describes the struggle against racism in Canada during the year 2017 which chronicles Cole’s role as an anti-racist activist and the impact of systemic racism in Canadian society.  The work argues that Canada is not immune to the anti-Black racism that characterized American society.  Month-by-month, Cole creates a comprehensive picture of entrenched, systemic inequality.  Urgent, controversial, and unsparingly honest, The Skin We’re In is destined to become a vital text for anti-racist and social justice movements in Canada, as well as a potent antidote to the all too present complacency of many white Canadians.” (Penguin Random House Canada, 2020)
