SUMMARY:Wilder Voices: Anthony Morgan
DESCRIPTION:The Wilder Institute presents its first-ever event in Brandon — and in Manitoba! On October 29\, 2025\, they are hosting the Wilder Voices Speaker Series\, an inspiring evening focused on community conservation and animal translocation. \nWilder Voices welcomes Anthony Morgan — celebrated science communicator and current host of The Nature of Things on CBC — as keynote speaker. Anthony’s ability to bridge science and community makes critical environmental issues both accessible and engaging. \nThe speaker series will highlight: \n\nCommunity conservation\nEndangered species protection\nMeaningful community engagement\n\nIn particular\, the Wilder Institute invites students and professors from Brandon University\, especially those in programs related to environmental science\, wildlife management\, animal care\, and conservation biology\, to attend the event. Their participation will help foster meaningful dialogue between future professionals\, experts\, and the broader community — key to creating lasting change. \nAbout the Wilder Institute\nThe Wilder Institute collaborates with local and global partners to develop science-based solutions that help wildlife and people. We aim to make a difference by working with landowners\, local communities\, researchers\, and other conservation organizations around the world. We engage with governments to develop policies and practice that can yield scalable benefits on national and international levels. Our efforts to help endangered species\, restore ecosystems\, and improve human livelihood are simply trying to make the world a better place. Our past successes give us the confidence to take on any challenges in the future. We know that conservation works\, and we see immense hope when people join forces to make a difference. Together\, we know that we can restore balance for wildlife and human life for generations to come. \nGet tickets

SUMMARY:Guitars – The Sophomore Album – an Evening of Art and Activism
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Wendy Friesen for a talk and tour of her Guitars – The Sophomore Album in the Brandon University Library Curve Gallery. This sequel exhibit continues to explore themes of music\, community\, inclusivity\, celebration\, healing\, and Pride through pop art sculpture. Building upon on her 2024 works\, this new series continues to showcase detailed\, hand-constructed miniature guitars\, both replicas and original conceptions\, crafted from recycled materials. Friesen’s visual work evokes a euphoric rock and roll frenzy\, formative to identities of so many! \nFriesen will also speak to her recent activism work\, including a parliamentary petition to ensure greater protections of 2SLGBTQIA+ rights in Canada\, including a challenge to Section 33 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (the “notwithstanding clause”) in allowing provincial legislatures to override human rights. \nFollowing Friesen’s presentation\, Leila Praznik\, Director of the Westman Empowerment Fund will speak to work of the Fund\, how it supports gender-diverse people in the Westman community\, and how people can help. \nThen please join Brandon University Library Assistant\, PENT Instructor\, and BU Queer Committee member Marian Ramage\, in the Convergys Lab. Marian will provide a walkthrough of the BU Queer LibGuide: 2SLGBTQIA+ and Gender Diverse Resources. She will share information about resources available in the library’s physical collection\, as well as publicly available information sources\, and will provide guidance on library searching. Following the discussion\, a tour of the library collection will be provided. \nLight refreshments will be served at this event\, sponsored by the BU Queer Committee.

SUMMARY:Western Manitoba Science Fair
DESCRIPTION:Brandon University is thrilled to welcome the Western Manitoba Science Fair to the BU Healthy Living Centre. \nPublic viewing of the projects is open from 2–4 p.m. \nLearn more at wmsf.com \nAbout the WMSF\nThe Western Manitoba Science Fair is the Regional Science Fair for Southwestern Manitoba and has been in operation since 1969. It provides an opportunity for students to showcase their scientific talent for their parents\, teachers\, and the community. Applicants come from grades 1 through 12. The WMSF is a full day event\, held in spring every year\, and we usually host around 500 hundred students. The participants set up their projects first thing in the morning\, and then judging begins! After presenting their projects to the judges\, the participants are provided with some entertainment and educational activities (the ‘Science Olympics’) while the judges are tabulating their results.  In the early afternoon there is a public viewing of the projects where community members and media can view the projects and talk to the participants. The award/medal ceremonies are held at the end of the day. We award bronze\, silver\, and gold medals\, in addition to various Special Awards. The final awards of the evening are Best of Fair and the Runner(s) Up; these top projects of the fair in grades 7 – 12 receive an all expenses paid trip to compete in the Canada Wide Science Fair. \nIn addition to the students\, the WMSF also welcomes around 150 community members each year to judge at the fair. This group of amazing volunteers is made up of university and college professors and students\, local business owners and employees\, and community members of all ages. We are always looking for more judges\, so click on the ‘Volunteer’ tab at the top of the page for more info if you are interested! \nWMSF is organized and run by a very small group of dedicated volunteers. We are funded by a combination of donations and sponsorships from local businesses and organizations. \nBrandon University proud to be a Strategic Partner!

SUMMARY:Teach-in: EDI in education
DESCRIPTION:A teach-in today at Brandon University brings faculty and community members together to emphasize the value of Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion to higher education. \nDrawing on roots in student activism in the 1960s\, a teach-in is a type of participatory educational forum\, typically oriented towards action. Today’s teach-in will include a panel of speakers with knowledge\, expertise\, experience\, and insights about the importance of EDI in higher education now and – especially – in the future. \nThe panel will consist of brief opening remarks from each panelist that include views on the undermining of EDI to date and the significance of EDI going forward. Speakers will discuss how the threats to EDI have impacted them and others in the community. Following the opening remarks\, the teach-in will move into a dialogue with the audience. \nThe event will take place in the mingling area from 4:45–6 p.m. on Tuesday\, February 11\, and there will be refreshments provided by Bailey’s. \nToday’s teach-in was organized by the equity committee of the BU Faculty Association\, which points at executive orders dismantling EDI in the United States\, and the recent pullback from EDI language in Canada as requiring a response.

SUMMARY:'Owl Calling' staged reading
DESCRIPTION:The call of an owl becomes an omen for Eddie\, a former residential school student in Brandon University professors Darrell Racine and Dale Lakevold’s new play Owl Calling. But what kind of an omen will it be for a man who has just opened up about his residential school experience?\n\n \n\n \n\nThe play premieres in Winnipeg September 25 — with a staged reading in Brandon at BU’s Evans Theatre on Oct. 3 as part of the university’s Truth and Reconciliation Week.\n\n \n\nOwl Calling depicts the journey that two Indigenous men undertake with their families as they go through the federal government’s compensation process for former residential school students.\n\n \n\nTheir families believe this process will help Eddie and his brother-in-law Jim heal from their school experience and find justice. But the compensation model\, as the family members in the play discover\, has little to do with healing.\n\nThe staged reading is free to all\, and takes place at BU’s Evans Theatre beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, Oct. 3.\n\nRead more about Owl Calling.

SUMMARY:Green Futures work bee
DESCRIPTION:FINAL WORK BEE OF THE SEASON! \nPLEASE COME AND JOIN US\, *** TUESDAY\, SEPT 24\, 5-7 PM ***\, FOR THE LAST WORK BEE OF THE SEASON! WE WILL HARVEST ALL THE VEGGIES AND PREPARE THE BEDS FOR THE WINTER! \nDid you know that there are two community gardens at Brandon University that grow vegetables to fight food insecurity in our community? Our produce is donated to Samaritan House Ministries and other organizations that help fight food insecurity. \nIt’s been a beautiful summer and the last of our veggies are ready to pick\, and delivered to BUSU and the food bank of Samaritan House Ministries! We will harvest the potatoes\, the last of the tomatoes and peppers\, and the last of the kale. We will also pull out all the weeds and prepare the garden beds for the winter\, by turning the soil. \nWe won’t ask for much of your time\, and this will be a kid friendly event\, so please bring all of your family! Please come to BU at 5 PM\, and we will work together until 7 PM. \nPlease meet us just behind the bus shelter on 18th street\, next to the Brodie Building; if you have them\, bring a shovel and some gardening gloves. Please RVSP to Petrellas@brandonu.ca\, so that I have a sense of how many volunteers we will have\, and I can bring snacks and refreshments for everyone. \nThank you\, lovely people!
