All are welcome to join a short walk to raise awareness of breast cancer on Thursday at the lunch hour. \nBrief speeches will accompany the walk\, which is to be less than a kilometre\, around campus\, starting and finishing in the Kavanagh Courtyard. \nThe walk is being organized by the BU Breast Cancer Cell & Molecular Research Laboratory (BCCMRL) and the BU research office. The BCCMRL\, led by Dr. Mousumi Majumder\, aims to develop a highly sensitive blood test capable of spotting breast cancer early in its development.

SUMMARY:Western Manitoba Science Fair
DESCRIPTION:Brandon University is thrilled to welcome the Western Manitoba Science Fair to the BU Healthy Living Centre. \nPublic viewing of the projects is open from 2–4 p.m. \nLearn more at wmsf.com \nAbout the WMSF\nThe Western Manitoba Science Fair is the Regional Science Fair for Southwestern Manitoba and has been in operation since 1969. It provides an opportunity for students to showcase their scientific talent for their parents\, teachers\, and the community. Applicants come from grades 1 through 12. The WMSF is a full day event\, held in spring every year\, and we usually host around 500 hundred students. The participants set up their projects first thing in the morning\, and then judging begins! After presenting their projects to the judges\, the participants are provided with some entertainment and educational activities (the ‘Science Olympics’) while the judges are tabulating their results.  In the early afternoon there is a public viewing of the projects where community members and media can view the projects and talk to the participants. The award/medal ceremonies are held at the end of the day. We award bronze\, silver\, and gold medals\, in addition to various Special Awards. The final awards of the evening are Best of Fair and the Runner(s) Up; these top projects of the fair in grades 7 – 12 receive an all expenses paid trip to compete in the Canada Wide Science Fair. \nIn addition to the students\, the WMSF also welcomes around 150 community members each year to judge at the fair. This group of amazing volunteers is made up of university and college professors and students\, local business owners and employees\, and community members of all ages. We are always looking for more judges\, so click on the ‘Volunteer’ tab at the top of the page for more info if you are interested! \nWMSF is organized and run by a very small group of dedicated volunteers. We are funded by a combination of donations and sponsorships from local businesses and organizations. \nBrandon University proud to be a Strategic Partner!

DESCRIPTION:The Geological Association of Canada\, Mineralogical Association of Canada Annual Conference\, in conjunction with the 10th International Pegmatite Symposium (GAC-MAC-PEG 2024)\, is scheduled to take place in Brandon from May 19th to May 22nd\, 2024. \nThis national conference is anticipated to convene 400-500 geoscientists\, industry professionals\, government representatives\, and students from both Canada and beyond. With a focal point on economic geology and critical mineral exploration\, subjects integral to the economic growth and resource management of our province\, this event promises to be a pivotal gathering for our community. \nThe conference is also providing free educational opportunities for school groups and families. SUMMARY:Guest Talk: Einstein's Oxford Blackboards
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker: Dr. Dwight Vincent\, University of Winnipeg \nIn 1931\, Albert Einstein changed his mind about whether the universe was expanding in size or not. Following new developments in astronomy\, he abandoned his 1917 model of the universe\, which was designed mathematically to be unchanging. \nIn May of 1931\, he was invited to stay at Oxford University for three weeks to interact with faculty and students plus give three lectures about his work. In the second lecture he took the opportunity to describe a new up-and-down model for the universe. In this model the universe expanded until it reached a maximum size and then shrank back to zero size again. \nThis talk\, presented by the Winnipeg Institute for Theoretical Physics\, discusses how he presented this cosmological idea on two small blackboards to an audience that had up to 500 people in attendance. What do the equations on the blackboard represent? Why did readers of the New York Times the next day understand more about what Einstein said in the lecture than those who attended at Oxford? Why is only one of the two blackboards that Einstein used now displayed at Oxford University? Why were almost all the calculated numbers on the blackboard wrong? \nJoin the speaker early (1:30pm) and eat free PIZZA with beverages. Everyone is welcome.
