SUMMARY:Guest Talk: Einstein's Oxford Blackboards
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker: Dr. Dwight Vincent\, University of Winnipeg \nIn 1931\, Albert Einstein changed his mind about whether the universe was expanding in size or not. Following new developments in astronomy\, he abandoned his 1917 model of the universe\, which was designed mathematically to be unchanging. \nIn May of 1931\, he was invited to stay at Oxford University for three weeks to interact with faculty and students plus give three lectures about his work. In the second lecture he took the opportunity to describe a new up-and-down model for the universe. In this model the universe expanded until it reached a maximum size and then shrank back to zero size again. \nThis talk\, presented by the Winnipeg Institute for Theoretical Physics\, discusses how he presented this cosmological idea on two small blackboards to an audience that had up to 500 people in attendance. What do the equations on the blackboard represent? Why did readers of the New York Times the next day understand more about what Einstein said in the lecture than those who attended at Oxford? Why is only one of the two blackboards that Einstein used now displayed at Oxford University? Why were almost all the calculated numbers on the blackboard wrong? \nJoin the speaker early (1:30pm) and eat free PIZZA with beverages. Everyone is welcome.

SUMMARY:Understanding Systemic Racism in Policing and the Failed Promise of Body Cameras
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on February 27 in the free slot from 12:40-1:30 p.m. in Clark Hall room 212 to hear Dr. Christopher Schneider’s presentation on Understanding Systemic Racism in Policing and the Failed Promise of Body Cameras.  This timely presentation comes off the heels of the UofM International student who was shot and killed by Police.  https://winnipeg.ctvnews.ca/man-fatally-shot-by-winnipeg-police-was-international-student-lawyer-says-1.6707998 \nThis presentation will provide an overview of the social and historical conditions that contributed to both the foundation and evolution of the structure of modern policing across North America to understand why it is Black and Indigenous persons who continue to remain disproportionally affected by police violence and brutality. Police body-worn cameras have been touted as a major police reform measure and a remedy to reduce police violence\, among other efficacy claims. Talk of equipping police in Manitoba with body cameras is heating up again after police in Winnipeg shot and killed three people at the end of 2023\, including Afolabi Stephen Opaso\, a 19-year-old international university student originally from Nigeria. In response\, the province has announced its willingness to support some of the costs associated with body cameras. The Brandon Police Service expects body cameras for its officers by late summer. The remainder of the presentation will detail the failed promise of body cameras and explain why it is likely a matter of time until police across the province are outfitted with the devices. The talk will conclude with some suggestions for community stakeholders concerning potential body-worn camera programs. \nChristopher J. Schneider\, PhD\, is an award-winning professor of sociology at Brandon University. Dr. Schneider has published seven books and over 100 scholarly papers\, opinion pieces\, reviews\, and essays. His research and publications have focused largely on information technologies and related changes to police work including having  published extensively on police body-worn cameras. A frequent contributor to media\, his work has appeared in more than 625 news segments and reports including the New York Times.

SUMMARY:'Uncharitable' screening
DESCRIPTION:If you work in\, donate to or volunteer for the charitable sector\, you will want to see this movie. The movie is about how the charitable sector is operating under certain limiting mindsets that are based on thinking and structures that were put in place over 400 years ago. If we can free charities from their traditional constraints and introduce a radical new way of thinking\, we can truly change the world. \nThe film will be screened at the JRC Evans Theatre\, at Brandon University on Thursday\, Feb. 8\, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.  Free parking in any BU lot after 4:30 p.m. The event is free but requires an RSVP. Seating is limited to 100 people. \nTo attend\, please contact Beth at provenb2@assiniboine.net or call/text (204) 223-5708 by Feb. 6 at 4:00 p.m. \nAbout “UnCharitable”\nAfter three of the most dynamic and successful U.S. charities were shut down by conservative charity watchdogs\, destroying lives and cutting off precious resources\, many of the top influencers in the field knew something had to be done to overhaul the nonprofit sector. \nLed by Dan Pallotta\, whose record-breaking TED Talk on the subject has inspired leading philanthropists and changemakers\, this feature-length documentary directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal exposes the dark side of philanthropy and introduces a radical new way of giving. In a powerful call to action\, Uncharitable demands that charities be freed from the traditional sackcloth-and-ashes constraints\, so that they can truly change the world. \nDriven by the poignant\, personal stories of Dan Pallotta\, Steve Nardizzi\, Dorri McWhorter\, Scott Harrison\, Edward Norton\, Darren Walker and other prominent figures in philanthropy\, Uncharitable delivers an emotional journey that moves\, persuades and inspires its audience to change the way we think about giving. \nNo topic is more crucial and timely as we confront an increasingly unstable world with the growing revelation that we are all interconnected and that our fate lies in how much we are willing to invest in positive change. \nFor more information go to: https://uncharitablemovie.com/

SUMMARY:Brandon Chamber Players present Tommy Crane's Dance Music For All Occasions
DESCRIPTION:Brandon Chamber Players \npresents  \nDance Music For All Occasions by Tommy Crane \nin an evening of genre-bending electronic folk\, curated by School of Music faculty member Marika Galea. \nTommy Crane\, drums\, percussion\, synthesizer\, electronics \nThom Gill\, guitar synthesizer\, vocals \nLeanne Zacharias\, cello \nMarika Galea\, bass \nAnil Ramgotra\, percussion \nTommy Crane is a fixture on both the Montreal and New York creative music scenes. He has performed and recorded with Aaron Parks’ Little Big\, Melissa Aldana\, Joe Chambers\, FYEAR\, Half Waif\, Joe Chambers\, La Force\, Richard Reed Parry\, Unessential Oils\, and Martha Wainwright. His debut solo effort\, We’re All Improvisers Now\, covers a broad spectrum of sonic territory. Cascading walls of ambient synthesizers prevail – and yet each cut still maintains the feeling of a solo musician exploring their inner self. Dance Music For All Occasions\, Tommy’s forthcoming sophomore album\, is titled as a nod to his father\, the late Nolan Crane. The elder Crane was also a drummer who lead a dance band in St. Louis\, Missouri in the early 1960s. Also accompanying Tommy are Thom Gill on guitar and keyboard\, Leanne Zacharias on cello and Marika Galea on bass. \nThom Gill (he/him) is a freelance music person based in Toronto for the last twenty years\, working closely with Martha Wainwright\, Sam Amidon\, KNOWER\, Owen Pallett\, Queer Songbook Orchestra\, Bernice\, Beverly Glenn Copeland\, Toronto Dance Theatre\, Fievel is Glauque and many more. He recently traveled to Japan with Sam Wilkes\, co-wrote songs and played on Chaka Khan’s last record\, and played a piece by Pauline Oliveros inside Toronto City Hall Council Chambers. Coming up this year Thom can be heard on new releases by Sam Wilkes\, Jeremy Dutcher\, and Joseph Shabason\, among others; and on Tanya Tagaq and Jean Martin’s score for Caroline Monnet’s film Bootlegger. You can also catch him on tour this year with Aline Homzy\, Jeremy Dutcher\, and Ariel Engle’s La Force. \nCellist Leanne Zacharias is an interdisciplinary artist who creates unique sound environments in both tiny and large- scale public works within museums\, art galleries\, chimneys\, stairwells\, rowboats\, canoes\, skating trails and other unlikely sites. Her work has been presented by the Canadian Museum for Human Rights\, LandMarks2017\, the International Cello Festival of Canada\, Austin’s New Music Coop\, Winnipeg Design Festival\, Iceland’s Nes Residency\, Open Ears Festival\, SappyFest (NB)\, Sound Symposium (NFLD) and FastForwardAustin. From the National Arts Centre to the Andy Warhol Museum to Yukon Arts Centre\, she performs across genres including with the Australian Art Orchestra\, the Houston Symphony Orchestra\, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra\, and songwriters John K. Samson\, the Mountain Goats and her long-time collaborator\, Christine Fellows. On faculty at Brandon University’s School of Music\, she adjudicates across Canada and has lectured at Parsons School of Design in New York\, the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s 10x20x20 series\, and Banff’s Research In Culture workshop. She co-directs Wheat City Nuit Blanche\, A Wild Studio (Canadian National Parks) and Hybrid Intensive (San Francisco). \nMarika Galea is an award-winning performer\, composer and writer from Toronto. Best known as a bassist\, her work explores the space between improvised jazz\, narrative songwriting\, and hypnotic soundscapes. She has supported artists across jazz\, pop\, rock\, indie\, hip hop\, new music and experimental genres including Terence Blanchard\, Cyrus Chestnut\, Vincent Herring\, Ralph Peterson Jr.\, Rachel Therrien\, Jason Palmer\, L’Orchestre national du jazz de Montréal\, Basia Bulat\, Tim Kingsbury (Arcade Fire)\, Aerialists\, Jake Clemons (E Street Band)\, U.S. Girls and Laura Niquay. Her collaborations have garnered nominations and wins for JUNO\, Golden Globe\, Academy\, Polaris\, Iris\, RIDM and HotDocs Awards. In 2017\, she earned a spot as one of CBC Music’s 35 best Canadian jazz artists under 35. She has taught at McGill University\, McGill Conservatory\, Berklee College of Music\, and is currently an Assistant Professor at Brandon University. She has been invited to speak at the McGill Executive Institute\, Malta Jazz Festival\, Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival\, Prince Edward County Jazz Festival\, McGill University School of Continuing Studies and University of Manitoba.
