SUMMARY:Brandon Chamber Players Concert: On the Brink of Peace
DESCRIPTION:CONCERT STARTS at 7:00 p.m.\, with a pre-concert talk scheduled for 6:15 p.m. \nJazz pianist and composer Witness Matlou  \npresents  \na suite of original music informed by his upbringing in South Africa’s townships. These areas on the periphery of a town or city have historically been used to uphold racially segregated living arrangements. There\, outside of Johannesburg\, Witness was surrounded by the sounds of Marabi\, Mbaqanga\, and gospel music. Protests songs echoed into South Africa’s political transition period into the late 90’s and 2000’s. The music stems from different cultural backgrounds that represent the demographic makeup of the townships\, where people were assembled from around the country. New forms of language and expression emerge forming a unique township lingo. The music is interpreted and processed in the context of life in the township and the socioeconomic conditions of the working-class. The township experience forms the basis for Witness’ musical background\, along with classical music\, and having moved to America to study Jazz. \n “I look to create music that forms an amalgamation of my life experiences\, the sounds of the languages I speak\, the people I’ve met around the world and the social conditions that I live in. Music to me means possibilities. It is where I find joy and a shelter that I wish to bring people in when life’s storms appear\,” says Witness. He is presently an assistant professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston\, USA. \nAlso featuring: \nJon Gordon\, saxophone; Marika Galea\, bass; Eric Platz\, drums \nTICKETS: $40 GENERAL\, $20 STUDENT \nStudents attend free with valid student ID at the door. DESCRIPTION:IshKaabatens Waasa Gaa Inaabateg Department of Visual Art the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba invite you to join us for an artist talk and discussion led by local Mail-Art specialist Elaine Rounds. \nBio: \nElaine Rounds was born in Harvard\, Illinois and immigrated to Canada in 1970. She quickly became involved in the arts community and grew a twenty-two year career as a professional weaver. Later having expanded her artistic interests\, she taught bookmaking\, collage and mail art to children and adults. She has sent at least twenty thousand mail art postings around the world. She has a long history of one-person and group exhibitions\, and her work is in public and private collections in more than seventy countries. She was selected for the MAWA program in 1995-96 and a summer mentorship a few years later. She describes herself as a nature-based artist. \nMail art projects:\nElaine has had 2 major mail art projects. THE FABRIC OF LIFE asked participants to produce work expressing how fabric touches or influences their lives. The work sent to her was exhibited in Brandon and Iceland.  Her second project was READING THE LANDSCAPE\, where she requested handmade artist books reflecting urban and rural landscapes. It was exhibited at the Art Gallery of Southwest Manitoba. Documentation of both projects was sent to all participants. But what kind of an omen will it be for a man who has just opened up about his residential school experience?\n\n \n\n \n\nThe play premieres in Winnipeg September 25 — with a staged reading in Brandon at BU’s Evans Theatre on Oct. 3 as part of the university’s Truth and Reconciliation Week.\n\n \n\nOwl Calling depicts the journey that two Indigenous men undertake with their families as they go through the federal government’s compensation process for former residential school students.\n\n \n\nTheir families believe this process will help Eddie and his brother-in-law Jim heal from their school experience and find justice. But the compensation model\, as the family members in the play discover\, has little to do with healing.\n\nThe staged reading is free to all\, and takes place at BU’s Evans Theatre beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, Oct. 3.\n\nRead more about Owl Calling.
