SUMMARY:A Gathering of Minds Research Session 1: Post-secondary education in a post-COVID environment: is there a new normal?
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic forced humanity to adapt and innovate at an accelerated pace. Universities were quick to find alternative ways to deliver their programs. The global shift from in person to on-line teaching and learning was unprecedented. While the pandemic strengthened our resilience and resolve in the face of uncertainty\, it also highlighted the inequities in our health care and education systems. The COVID-19 pandemic was not the first\, nor is it likely to be the last. In this session\, the Deans of Arts\, Health Studies\, Education\, Music and Science will discuss the impacts of the pandemic on their disciplines and the post-COVID reality. \nEvent location to be determined. There is no charge for this event and everyone is welcome\, but please note that seating is limited. SUMMARY:Bike to Campus Week
DESCRIPTION:Choose two wheels to get to BU – and you could win! We’re thrilled to host Bike To Campus Week from Sept. 9–13 and all you need to do is ride. \nBrandon University\, the Brandon University Students’ Union\, and Bailey’s Café have partnered with local bike shops\, with Bike Brandon\, and with the Brandon Police Service to provide great prize packs. Each day next week\, we’ll select a few bikes on campus and leave a little note saying thanks for choosing to bike— you win! Simply bring that note to the BUSU offices in the Knowles-Douglas building to claim your prize. (Make sure to have your bike with you\, as we’ll be taking pictures of the winners to prevent anyone from claiming a tag from someone else’s bike.) \nPrize packs include gift certificates\, bike accessories\, and energy bars from A&L Cycle and from Stream N Wood. Thanks to both shops for their generous support! \nWe’re also planning a couple of group rides! Meet in the Kavanagh Courtyard on Monday at 2:30 p.m. for a brief demonstration from the Brandon Police Service of how to register your bike with 529 Garage\, which helps prevent theft and track your bike if it ever is stolen. Then we’ll head out as a group for a short 5 km group ride\, doing a loop to 34th Street and back to campus\, where we’ll convene in Bailey’s for refreshments. It’s a chance to meet fellow campus cyclists\, stretch your legs in the middle of the afternoon\, and have a great time. We’ll do a second group ride on Thursday\, Sept. 12\, leaving at 11 a.m. \nCycling is fun and healthy for you\, good for the environment\, and depending on your route\, can even be faster than driving. It also helps ease traffic congestion and parking worries for those who do need to use a motor vehicle. As construction on 18th Street picks up steam next week\, biking could be even more convenient. Please always watch for the latest detours as work begins\, and stay alert to changing traffic patterns or construction workers who are directing you to take alternate routes. Remember to stay safe by wearing a CSA-approved helmet\, locking up your bike with a high-quality lock\, and removing all valuables. \nWe encourage everyone to bike to campus\, and we support those who choose a cycling commute. Happy Bike to Campus Week!

SUMMARY:A Warrior's Red Road — PhotoVoice Display
DESCRIPTION:Graffiti Gallery in Winnipeg is pleased to present A Warrior’s Red Road\, Indigenous men connecting to culture through drum-making\, on exhibition from September 6 through October 25. \nThe Good-Hearted Warriors/Akicita Cante Waste are a group of men who have been provided the responsibility of land and resources owned by the Brandon Friendship Centre at the East Site venue. They have sovereignty over ceremonial buildings\, collection of resources and overall protection and caretaking of the space. \nWith a spiritual advisor providing teachings on culture and ceremony\, members of the group alternate between teaching and learning to share their knowledge about activities such as hunting\, fishing\, and trapping. \nThis exhibition is the result of a year-long research partnership that followed the men from the Good-Hearted Warriors though the process of drum-making.  It gives evidence that many of the Good-Hearted Warriors’ activities have direct affect on the caretaking and protection of the land and\, as revealed in the themes represented through this photovoice project\, the impact of the group extends much further.  The hope is that by witnessing the project\, the public\, policy makers and funders will find a newfound respect and admiration for Indigenous men’s cultural programming and see the importance of supporting this type of work. \nThe research team within this project are Dr. Candice Waddell-Henowitch\, Dr. Rachel Herron\, Dr. Jonathan Allan and research assistance Stephanie Spence from Brandon University with Jason Gobeil from Dakota Ojibway Child and Family Services\, Frank Tacan from Brandon Friendship Centre\, and Marti Ford from Manitoba Inuit Association. \nOpening Reception: September 6\, 7—10 p.m. \nOpening Prayers: 7 p.m. \nDrumming Performance and Artist Talk: 7:30 p.m. \nGraffiti Art Programming Inc. facilitates low barrier youth-led community programming in the North End and Downtown of Winnipeg that promotes social engagement through the arts.

SUMMARY:Prairie Wires Summer Sound Series 4/4 — Brady Allard\, L'Alien\, Koda Maxon
DESCRIPTION:BYOL (that’s bring your own lawnchair) to Princess Park\, in the heart of downtown Brandon as the sun sets on the Prairie Wires’ Summer Sound Series. The air will be energized as Prairie Wires turns its focus on a showcase of Brandon University School of Music alumni.\nWHAT: Prairie Wires’ Summer Sound Series\, concert 4/4WHO: Brady Allard\, L’Alien\, Koda MaxonWHERE: Princess Park Stage\, at Princess & 8th. Brandon\, MBWHEN: Saturday August 17\, 2024 – 7:00 – 9:00 PM\n\n\n———————————-\nBrady Allard (Winnipeg\, MB) Brady Allard is a Métis composer and audio installation artist from Winnipeg\, Manitoba. With influences spanning electronic music\, composition\, and experimental sound design\, Brady creates immersive sonic environments that challenge music conventions.\nA lifelong musician and synthesizer enthusiast\, Brady earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz from Brandon University in 2011\, where he discovered electro-acoustic composition. Since then\, he has embarked on a career as an audio installation artist\, focusing on immersive installations that explore the relationships between sound\, space\, and perception.\nBrady’s art is a tool for social commentary and critique of capitalist structures. His compositions incorporate class analysis and expose the ways in which power relations affect individuals and communities. Through his installations\, Brady challenges his audiences to engage with sound as a means of exploring complex themes and ideas\, using his art as a platform for meaningful dialogue and exploration.\nBrady’s compositions often incorporate field recordings\, found sounds\, generative algorithms\, and custom-built instruments\, revealing unique sonic textures and resonances. His work is a testament to his commitment to using his art as a means of effecting social change\, and inspiring the exploration of what is possible through sound.\n———————————-\nL’Alien (Erickson/Winnipeg)L’Alien is a new highly melodic collaboration between Leila Kristianson (trumpet) and Iain Edye (synths\, drum machines)\, who met when they performed in different projects at Brandon’s Drone Day event in 2022. Incorporating ambient soundscapes and drones\, downtempo grooves\, and occasional forays into Celtic fiddle tunes\, their inaugural performance at the Prairie Wires’ Summer Sound Series will be a continuous semi-improvised journey of music\, playing off each other in the spirit of spontaneity\, exploration\, and fun.\n\nHailing from Erickson\, Iain Edye is a drummer\, synthesist\, songwriter\, and vocalist-in-the-car\, whose other current projects include the classic rock stylings of Route Ten Collective and his original synthpop solo project\, acidbasement.\n\nCurrently residing in Winnipeg\, Leila Kristianson is a multi-instrumentalist with a focus on trumpet. She holds a Bachelor’s in jazz trumpet performance from Brandon University School of Music\, and currently teaches trumpet\, as well as jazz and theory concepts at middle and high school levels. She performs in several bands and multiple genres\, and also works as a freelance musician.\n———————————-\nKoda Maxon (Brandon)Koda Maxon (they/them) is a vibrant Canadian Vocalist\, Artist and Composer based out of Brandon\, Manitoba. Their compositional works focus on contemporary techniques and the use of multimedia to explore topics of identity\, nature\, and connectivity. Koda’s goal as a composer is to explore the art of sound through the creation of sonic works that allow the listener to open up\, think deeply\, and see the world from a different perspective. They find inspiration in topics of intense emotions\, their relationship to nature\, spirituality and queer Identity. Koda is a playful composer who loves to explore new harmonies and extended techniques.\n———————————-\nMark Your Calendar! August 17\, 2024\, at 7:00 PM. Join us at Princess Park in the heart of Brandon as the sun sets on another season of inspiring instrumental experimental sounds!\n———————————-\nThis series is supported by a generous grant from the Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation.\nAll Prairie Wires’ Summer Sound Series Concerts are 100% free\, 100% family-friendly\, and 100% safe spaces.\nThe Prairie Wires’ Summer Sound Series takes place on Treaty 2 territory\, the traditional lands of the Cree\, Oji-Cree\, Anishinaabe\, Dené\, and Dakota\, and is the homeland of the Métis Nation.\nIn case of rain this event will move to Section 6 Brewing Co. 1126 Princess Street\, Brandon\, MB.

SUMMARY:Pride Week: Pride in Politics with MLAs Logan Oxenham and Lisa Naylor
DESCRIPTION:Thank you to the Brandon and District Labour Council for organizing Pride in Politics for Brandon Pride Week 2024! This panel will take place in the Gathering Area in the John E. Robbins Library located on the Brandon University campus. \nThe goal of this event is to reach out to the 2SLGBTQI+ community and affirm that there is a place in politics. During the last year\, right here in Brandon and Manitoba\, the 2SLGBTQI+ community has been at the center of attacks\, including attempts to ban certain books in the Brandon School Division. This ongoing situation has heightened awareness of the political power held as voters\, the importance of the democratic process\, and why getting involved is so important. \nThis event aims to further engage the community\, empowering individuals to assert their political agency and possibly pursue a political future. Two politicians\, Lisa Naylor and Logan Oxenham\, will share their journeys as activists and their paths in politics\, providing insights and inspiration. \nJoin in the sharing of experiences and explore ways to collectively shape a more inclusive and representative political landscape. \nThis event is free with no registration required. \nMore details on Brandon Pride events: https://www.bdnpride.ca/ \n
