Sutherland Gallery of Art. It will include works from some of the most revered contemporary artists\, such as Norval Morrisseau\, Daphne Odjig\, Jackson Beardy\, Carl Beam and Arthur Amiotte\, as well as works by students\, alumni and community artists. \nIndigenous Art: Beyond History was organized by art history professor Dr. Stacey Koosel’s Contemporary Indigenous Art course. Her students worked as curators of the exhibition led by Felicity Nepinak-Hart as the Chief Curator of the project. SUMMARY:Guest Talk: Einstein's Oxford Blackboards
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker: Dr. Dwight Vincent\, University of Winnipeg \nIn 1931\, Albert Einstein changed his mind about whether the universe was expanding in size or not. Following new developments in astronomy\, he abandoned his 1917 model of the universe\, which was designed mathematically to be unchanging. \nIn May of 1931\, he was invited to stay at Oxford University for three weeks to interact with faculty and students plus give three lectures about his work. In the second lecture he took the opportunity to describe a new up-and-down model for the universe. In this model the universe expanded until it reached a maximum size and then shrank back to zero size again. \nThis talk\, presented by the Winnipeg Institute for Theoretical Physics\, discusses how he presented this cosmological idea on two small blackboards to an audience that had up to 500 people in attendance. What do the equations on the blackboard represent? Why did readers of the New York Times the next day understand more about what Einstein said in the lecture than those who attended at Oxford? Why is only one of the two blackboards that Einstein used now displayed at Oxford University? Why were almost all the calculated numbers on the blackboard wrong? \nJoin the speaker early (1:30pm) and eat free PIZZA with beverages. Everyone is welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us on February 27 in the free slot from 12:40-1:30 p.m. in Clark Hall room 212 to hear Dr. Christopher Schneider’s presentation on Understanding Systemic Racism in Policing and the Failed Promise of Body Cameras.  This timely presentation comes off the heels of the UofM International student who was shot and killed by Police.  https://winnipeg.ctvnews.ca/man-fatally-shot-by-winnipeg-police-was-international-student-lawyer-says-1.6707998 \nThis presentation will provide an overview of the social and historical conditions that contributed to both the foundation and evolution of the structure of modern policing across North America to understand why it is Black and Indigenous persons who continue to remain disproportionally affected by police violence and brutality. Police body-worn cameras have been touted as a major police reform measure and a remedy to reduce police violence\, among other efficacy claims. Talk of equipping police in Manitoba with body cameras is heating up again after police in Winnipeg shot and killed three people at the end of 2023\, including Afolabi Stephen Opaso\, a 19-year-old international university student originally from Nigeria. In response\, the province has announced its willingness to support some of the costs associated with body cameras. The Brandon Police Service expects body cameras for its officers by late summer. The remainder of the presentation will detail the failed promise of body cameras and explain why it is likely a matter of time until police across the province are outfitted with the devices. The talk will conclude with some suggestions for community stakeholders concerning potential body-worn camera programs. \nChristopher J. Schneider\, PhD\, is an award-winning professor of sociology at Brandon University. Dr. Schneider has published seven books and over 100 scholarly papers\, opinion pieces\, reviews\, and essays. His research and publications have focused largely on information technologies and related changes to police work including having  published extensively on police body-worn cameras. A frequent contributor to media\, his work has appeared in more than 625 news segments and reports including the New York Times.

The exhibition is open from Thursday to Saturday each week\, from 1 to 4 p.m.\, and will run until February 18. \nNostalgiacore is a contemporary art exhibition that features paintings\, ceramic sculptures\, photography\, drawings\, sound installations and immersive installations by the Professors who make up the faculty of the IshKaabatens Waasa Gaa Inaabateg Department of Visual Art at Brandon University. \nThe theme of the exhibition is a play on an aesthetic movement in popular culture that finds nostalgia and longing in everyday spaces and liminal places.
