SUMMARY:pro series: HOME COMING CONCERT: PRAIRIE PUNK\, Nicole Lizée & Guests
DESCRIPTION:Scenario: \nA karaoke machine is glitching. It rewinds\, stops without warning\, jumps between sections. Pitch and speed fluctuate. The tape is damaged – chewed up by the machine. The singer tries to keep her composure and keep up with the machine. An unorthodox amplified orchestra holds it all together. Brandon’s fall concert season begins Friday\, September 12th with a new music tour-de-force featuring BU alumni and guest musicians from across Canada. Prairie Punk brings composer Nicole Lizée back to her prairie roots to present two brilliant large-ensemble works. Karappo Okesutura Vol.3 presents a warped\, hilarious karaoke performance of Canadian and Australian pop hits including Olivia Newton-John\, INXS\, Loverboy\, Alanis Morissette\, Corey Hart and ACDC\, as reimagined by Saskatchewan-born elite composer Nicole Lizée. An 11-piece ensemble features Lizée herself returning to her alma mater alongside new music A-list musicians from Winnipeg\, Brandon\, Saskatoon and Montreal including BU School of Music faculty and alumni celebrating the school’s past and present. Prairie Punk also features Not Seeing Is A Flower\, the unique cello concerto written by Lizée for cellist/curator Leanne Zacharias. Supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and BU Research Council\, the work is for cello soloist and video\, accompanied by an eclectic amplified ensemble of singers\, bassists\, percussionists and a mysterious doppelgänger. \nPerformers: \n\nHelen Pridmore & Sarah Hall\, vocals\nNicole Lizée\, turntables\, electronics\, video\nEric Platz & Ben Reimer\, drumkits & percussion\nSteve Raegele\, electric guitar\nLeanne Zacharias\, ‘cello\nJennifer Thiessen & John Sellick\, viola\nMer Johnson & Crystal White\, double bass\nSean Irvine\, saxophone & clarinet\nEverett Hopfner\, piano & keyboard\n\nCo-presented by Brandon Chamber Players https://brandonchamberplayers.ca/ \nBU Homecoming Team; BU School of Music and in partnership with Groundswell New Music (Winnipeg) \nAdmission Fee: \n$20 at the door. (Note: Concert is free for BU Faculty\, Staff\, Students and Alumni) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Guitars – The Sophomore Album – an Evening of Art and Activism
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Wendy Friesen for a talk and tour of her Guitars – The Sophomore Album in the Brandon University Library Curve Gallery. This sequel exhibit continues to explore themes of music\, community\, inclusivity\, celebration\, healing\, and Pride through pop art sculpture. Building upon on her 2024 works\, this new series continues to showcase detailed\, hand-constructed miniature guitars\, both replicas and original conceptions\, crafted from recycled materials. Friesen’s visual work evokes a euphoric rock and roll frenzy\, formative to identities of so many! \nFriesen will also speak to her recent activism work\, including a parliamentary petition to ensure greater protections of 2SLGBTQIA+ rights in Canada\, including a challenge to Section 33 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (the “notwithstanding clause”) in allowing provincial legislatures to override human rights. \nFollowing Friesen’s presentation\, Leila Praznik\, Director of the Westman Empowerment Fund will speak to work of the Fund\, how it supports gender-diverse people in the Westman community\, and how people can help. \nThen please join Brandon University Library Assistant\, PENT Instructor\, and BU Queer Committee member Marian Ramage\, in the Convergys Lab. Marian will provide a walkthrough of the BU Queer LibGuide: 2SLGBTQIA+ and Gender Diverse Resources. She will share information about resources available in the library’s physical collection\, as well as publicly available information sources\, and will provide guidance on library searching. Following the discussion\, a tour of the library collection will be provided. \nLight refreshments will be served at this event\, sponsored by the BU Queer Committee.

SUMMARY:Incident and Hazard Reporting Drop In
DESCRIPTION:Meet in the Convergys Lab with IT Services and Health and Safety to walk through the new incident and hazard reporting form and to answer any questions you may have about the reporting process. Open to BU Employees and Students. \n\nFriday May 9\, Noon-1 pm\nTuesday May 13\, Noon-1 pm\nThursday May 22\, Noon-1 pm\nMonday June 2\, Noon-1 pm\n\nThis new web form has been tested in pilot by members of the Workplace Safety and Health Committee and will replace the existing PDF form on the BU Safety web page. This form will make incident and hazard reporting much easier and faster for BU employees and students. \nIncident and hazard reporting is a critical aspect of the University’s health and safety program. Reporting allows the University to be proactive in identifying concerns and implementing corrective measures. If you see a health or safety concern\, the new form will allow you to report it quickly so it can be addressed. \nSome incidents\, especially those resulting in injury to a person\, or damage to property\, require detailed investigation and recordkeeping\, which the new form allows. Serious incidents require BU to conduct investigations and report upwards to provincial authorities. Hazards and near misses are just as important to report to help the University avoid an incident where someone could be injured or property damaged. \nCampus education and communication on incident and hazard reporting will continue through the summer and into the fall. At this time\, a walkthrough video is also available to showcase the new form. \nAs we move through the summer and prepare for new students joining in the Fall\, Al Trotz\, Cheryl Fleming and Jessica Laxdal will be including information about incident and hazard reporting in their orientation materials for students.

SUMMARY:Western Manitoba Science Fair
DESCRIPTION:Brandon University is thrilled to welcome the Western Manitoba Science Fair to the BU Healthy Living Centre. \nPublic viewing of the projects is open from 2–4 p.m. \nLearn more at wmsf.com \nAbout the WMSF\nThe Western Manitoba Science Fair is the Regional Science Fair for Southwestern Manitoba and has been in operation since 1969. It provides an opportunity for students to showcase their scientific talent for their parents\, teachers\, and the community. Applicants come from grades 1 through 12. The WMSF is a full day event\, held in spring every year\, and we usually host around 500 hundred students. The participants set up their projects first thing in the morning\, and then judging begins! After presenting their projects to the judges\, the participants are provided with some entertainment and educational activities (the ‘Science Olympics’) while the judges are tabulating their results.  In the early afternoon there is a public viewing of the projects where community members and media can view the projects and talk to the participants. The award/medal ceremonies are held at the end of the day. We award bronze\, silver\, and gold medals\, in addition to various Special Awards. The final awards of the evening are Best of Fair and the Runner(s) Up; these top projects of the fair in grades 7 – 12 receive an all expenses paid trip to compete in the Canada Wide Science Fair. \nIn addition to the students\, the WMSF also welcomes around 150 community members each year to judge at the fair. This group of amazing volunteers is made up of university and college professors and students\, local business owners and employees\, and community members of all ages. We are always looking for more judges\, so click on the ‘Volunteer’ tab at the top of the page for more info if you are interested! \nWMSF is organized and run by a very small group of dedicated volunteers. We are funded by a combination of donations and sponsorships from local businesses and organizations. \nBrandon University proud to be a Strategic Partner!
